September 29, 2022 06:10: Rule 21 Reminder - Character Motivations

Hi Marosians! The addition of motivations are one of the newer and more dramatic features that was implemented during the rules overhaul. It is also one of the rules that staff send out the most warnings for. Over lockdown alone we will end up sending warnings to over ten players for inadequate character motivations.

For this reason - we thought it best to issue a reminder and give a bit of guidance about what we expect from players.

What are motivations?
Motivations are a separate section available through your character menu where comments can be recorded by the player to explain why their character is taking a certain action.

Why do players need to do motivations?
The motivations section of the character sheet is a significant aid to staff when investigating accusations of knowledge bleed and characters acting oocly due to the players personal feelings - something that has always been abundant throughout Marosia's existence. Properly recorded motivations can significantly cut down the amount of time it takes staff to investigate. They also aid gods in better understanding the character they are dealing with, as well as requiring players to examine why their characters are doing something which can improve consistency when roleplaying.

When do motivations need to be recorded?
There is more information on this within the rules - but the short version is any time a character is doing something that could be considered out of character or confusing to another player, regardless of how obvious you think the reasoning is. For example, if a character has agreed to marry somebody but then left the town just before the wedding - then this is something we would expect to see a motivation for, even if they left a note behind to explain why. Motivations should then continue to be recorded as the situation develops. For example, if the character then decides to turn around and return for the wedding after all. Remember that nobody knows your characters as well as you do - and while something may appear incredibly obvious to you, it can be confusing to players who do not have the full picture. It is also particularly important for leaders to include reasons why they are trying to motivate others to do something - as a motivation that reads "Sally is doing this thing because Sarah told her to and she likes Sarah." is not really of any use to staff unless Sarah also has a motivation recorded to explain why she asked Sally to do the thing in the first place.

What should be included in the motivation?
The motivation should be written factually and out of character, though you can include some humour and self-awareness should you wish. They should always include the reason why your character is doing something or thinks a certain thing, rather than just that they are doing or thinking something. The more detail the better but it does not have to be excessive. A few sentences should do. An example of a good motivation for the above scenario would be as follows:

Ben has decided to leave before the wedding because he believes his fiancee is cheating on him with Gary the blacksmith due to the bracelet he made her. He has turned around because he wants to punch Gary.

We remind others to be mindful of etiquette point 22 - to not automatically assume that a character's actions and opinions are being influenced by OOC factors - though these reminders typically go hand in hand with us having to warn others to record their motivations. Please also stay aware of etiquette point 21 - that motivations should be hinted at in roleplay - as this can help alleviate the worries from others that a character's actions could be coming out of nowhere, which creates a more friendly roleplay environment all around, even if the scene is something that's not so friendly.

Any questions or concerns then do not hesitate to ask - either in private or through the Discord!
September 24, 2022 16:03: Scheduled Lockdown Reminder!

Hi guys - this is your reminder that the game is going into the regularly scheduled lockdown for a week after the daily tick runs between Sunday 25th and Monday 26th.

We really want to have the game return with a new feature like last time, but we know dev time is going to be limited next week so this may not be possible.

Hope everyone has a good break!

Report Guidance - cont.

When should I mark a report as urgent?
Reports should only be marked as urgent if not addressing them immediately may warrant a game-wide lockdown. This is typically if staff not looking at it immediately may result in your character dying, being injured, or losing items when they otherwise should not have. Please remember that important does not equal urgent. We will always try to see to important reports as soon as possible - for example if your character has fallen incapable when they should not have - but it should only be marked as urgent if the situation is time sensitive. For example, if you believe they are at risk of being killed, or if people are robbing their belongings when they should not have been able to. Remember that you can put in a second report if the situation has become urgent.

Should I hibernate while staff investigate my report?
In short - no. We have seen an increasing number of players choosing to hibernate their characters while they wait for staff to investigate a scene. This is not necessary. You should only hibernate your character if you cannot roleplay for any reason. Please remember that you can FTB if needed. If something significant happens to your character which staff agree requires intervention due to poor etiquette - for example, if they were killed without roleplay - then we will step in using gods or other means to reverse this. You should always play on in the meantime as long as you feel comfortable doing so, because this will make everything feel more natural, and hibernating your character also makes them more considerably vulnerable.

Apologies for the essay - and any questions about the above then please let us know!
